TRIBUNE - 2026 Presidential Election in BENIN: A new political era.

There are 24 months left for the end of Patrice TALON's mandate. End of a second, questionable and contested, but last mandate.

The outgoing President, who has reigned since 2016 over a political class put to heel and under orders, will give up his apron. With all due respect to the thurifers and a small caste of courtiers and a family circle cautious about “after power”.

The political alternation which is constitutionally imposed on Patrice TALON, “...No one can spend more than two presidential mandates in his life.”, leaves him no choice; even if in the camp in power, the climate is dissuasive by any means, to evoke the end of the reign of the "Boss".

A few pleasure-seeking artisans who have tasted the privileges of power do not refrain from imagining any possibility of retaining power, or even confiscating it by any means.

The absence of a consensus and above all of real leadership within the movement to embody the continuity of the Talon system hardly reassures those in power.

And the fear of seeing today's fake opposition, represented by former President Thomas BONI YAYI, return to business adds to the hives.

As much among his supporters, Patrice TALON does not find in any of the wait-and-see, who dream of themselves as successors, any legitimacy to claim, as much the idea of having to put power in the hands of his predecessor's foal would give him palpitations.

Any situation which opens the field to the emergence of a new and credible alternative.

Since then, civil society associations and citizen grouping movements have been organized to take their place in the political alternation in 2026.

The outcome of the last presidential election in Senegal has awakened new hope in Benin where, methodically, Patrice TALON for 8 years of management of power, has subjugated and killed all political activity in opposition to his system.

For Benin, the end of Patrice TALON's power will open a new political era.
